Mihan Aromatics, established in 2017, is a quintessential Australian fragrance house that encapsulates all facets of our landscape from the coast to the crispy outback.
There could be a natural bias here, given they're based in Melbourne, however the scents are not at all wedded to our eclectic southern state. You truly get a scented journey of sophisticated Australiana across every spritz.
Working my way through this set, it's been extremely hard to settle on a favourite, and you cannot help to link your own memories to these scents from travels or memories, to imagined encounters deep in the heart of our lucky country. But let's be honest, there are definitely star turns here in top notes and dry downs, that's what a discovery set is all about.
Let's get into it.
Munlark Ash
Top Notes • Bergamot, Black Pepper
Middle Notes • Fir Needle, Tree Sap
Base Notes • Australian Blue Cypress, Vetiver, Frankincense
There are few notes more perfect to me than a realistic pepper, almost to the point of a sneeze and this top note delivers. It lands with fresh woods and some smoky frankincense. Despite the green notes here, this feels like a late winter scent to me, at least in anticipation of the coming seasons ahead. I also feel like I bang on a bit about specific genders with most fragrances here and this is no different, this is one for the masc leaning lovers.
Kirra Curl
Top notes • Sea Salt, Lemon Rind
Middle Notes • Leather, Surf Wax
Base Notes • Vanilla, Australian Buddha wood, Australian Sandalwood
Wipe out the base notes of Kirra Curl, and I would drink this. There is a sweet tang of lemon up high but the wax and salt makes this the perfect beach/summer scent.
I personally don't get a heavy vanilla from Kirra Curl and if you were looking for a gourmand, this is not the place to look. Rather, this vanilla is beautifully rounded out with smooth woods to keep you serene while the sun sets on an ocean horizon. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the base notes here, but for a full bottle purchase you need to make this your sandalwood choice in a sea of other sandalwoods (it is worthy).
Guilty Story
Top Notes • Neroli
Middle Notes • Saffron, Cinnamon
Base Notes • Vanilla, Musk, Amber, Australian Sandalwood, Cedarwood
Guilty Story is a gorgeous spicy floral that I can imagine being a stalwart of the Autumn months. The very top layer of this reminds me of a dialed-down Tsu Lange Yor's Pool but it is fleeting and the two fragrances don't have any matching top notes.
Saffron (like actual saffron) is fleeting but the base motes are a beautiful mixture of vanilla and cedar. There is a lingering sandalwood but it isn't overpowering or has you thinking you are wearing a dupe.
When the leaves start falling and the nights draw in, Guilty Story is a superb choice.
Sienna Brume
Top Notes • Sea Air, Bergamot
Middle Notes • Soft Coconut, Cucumber
Base Notes • Vanilla, Juniper Berry, Copaiba
This is it, you guys. This is the one. I would never pick myself to be a coconut lover but I am drawn more and more to this smooth tropical note. Sienna Brume IS soft coconut and crunchy cucumber, and the dry down is a very creamy wood, but in a summertime way.
I don't get initial sea air, it's he coconut that its first but this could be different on your skin.
This perfume is calm happiness in a bottle and puts a smile on my face with every spray.
Full bottle worthy? Already did it.
Petrichor Plains
Top Notes • Rain, Iris
Middle Notes • Violet, Rosemary, Cardamom
Base Notes • Amyris, Australian Buddawood
Petrichor Plains drew me to Mihan Aromatics in the first place; the minute someone drops 'petrichor' in a sentence, I'm like a bloodhound. Whilst beautiful and well-rounded fragrance, I need more dirt accord in this for it to be a realistic petrichor - they aren't claiming such for the record.
BUT if you are a lover of base woods, this will be a favourite for you.
There is a smokiness that I suspect is from the rosemary, and the violet lends to a sweet dry down. Buddawood always sits salty on me and I am not mad about that at all.
It's not my pick of the set but it is beautiful.
Mikado Bark
Top Notes • Autumn Dew, Sage
Middle Notes • Cinnamon Bark, Clove
Base Notes • Patchouli, Virginian Cedarwood
Another spicy minx from the set, I cannot get my head around the note profile here because this lands so sweet on my skin but this does settle down. It might be the clove? I feel like my little discovery bottle went for a swim in a sugar bath. The cinnamon and clove together have the propensity to come off Christmas-y but instead lead to warm sweet chai vibes. Can you imagine if this had a lactonic accord? But listen, this isn't meant to be a gourmand so don't get sucked into my diatribe.
Another one for the Winter/Autumn quarters of the year, won't you smell divine!
After a few glitches in production, I finally got my set sorted out and Mihan Aromatics couldn't have been more accommodating. These are beautiful scents, my only gripe would be the longevity but I'm willing to forgive as this is such a classic Australian/Victorian brand that I'm beyond happy to support.
I love my Sienna Brume and looking forward to more - maybe Kirra Curl next.
