A light and precious fragrance from the most famous candle maker in the world, and unlike most wood-based fragrances, L'Eau Papier from Diptyque whispers rather than screams.
In a perpetual hunt to smell like a brand-new book, L'Eau Papier was high on my agenda of scents to try. I have already succumbed to Commodity Paper in all its expressions and I feel like paper could be in my top three accords of all time.
What I love most about L'Eau Papier is you get a thread of the top note thread right through the day. I personally don't get the sesame, as others do, unless I have my nose right up to the atomiser, but once it hits my skin, it's gone. What I do find is a very light saltiness mixed in with velvety white musk which could be from the steamed rice accord.
L'Eau Papier is described as a 'woody floral' fragrance and the way Diptyque has interpreted these elements is what sets it apart in this popular category. At the heart of the composition is the scent of fresh floral and blonde woods, which forms a subtle yet persistent undercurrent throughout the wear of the fragrance.
The top notes introduce a delicate freshness, reminiscent of the first touch of a crisp, clean sheet of paper, followed by a heart of wattle, or mimosa, adding a soft, aromatic quality that gently unfolds over time. The base notes are anchored by a blend of pale woods - think ash, birch, and white oak, adding a unique papery accord that brings warm, woody depths to the skin
Perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin has a ridiculously impressive resume of fragrances under his belt, not surprising for someone born and raised in the perfume heartland of Grasse, France. Diptyque as a company has succumbed to the corporate tentacles of the Manzanita Group but so far, this doesn't appear to have affected the quality or uniqueness of the scent range, at least not from a sales perspective, with a reported $15M in annual profit for 2024.
These artists create unique blends that step outside of the ubiquitous scents on every store shelf or digital cart. If you are looking for a perfume that is clean, crisp, and fresh, L'Eau Papier could be for you.
